Dusk & The City: A Spooky SF Ghetto Night Ride
This is one of my favorite rides through everyone’s favorite city. But instead of our usual late night ride which ends after midnight, we’ll start a little earlier and finish the ride around 8_ish. This way people can get home before it gets really cold.
We’ll be riding the hills, peaks and valleys. We’ll zip through the ghettos, pass the mansions and view the scenery very few people get to see in a week let alone in a single evening.
This ride is generally within posted speed limits, but the route is highly technical, scary, spooky, challenging and -- at the same time – exhilarating, breathtaking and absolutely positively fun.
• When: Sunday 2/19/12, Arrive by 2:30 PM, KSU 3:00 PM
We’ll meet at 2:30 PM for coffee and gossip. KSU is at 3:00 PM. I will post a list of regrouping spots, so in case someone gets separated due to a traffic light or something, they can just head straight to the next stop. We’ll stop for coffee/snack/dinner around 6_ish. After break we’ll ride for another hour or so and end the ride around 8 PM.
If you are planning to join us, please RSVP so I know how large the group is. If you are not a member of our group yet, but would like to go, please Join Us (scroll up) and RSVP.
• Pace: Not too slow. Not too fast. Just right.
• Gear: Head to toe. It'll be cold, so wear layers.
• Motorcycle: Yes, please bring it with you ;-)
• Route: Details Here =>: http://www.groupridesforum.net/pages/Route_Details/
> Note 1 : Rain will postpone <<
> Note 2: Bay Bridge west bound (upper deck) is closed over the weekend. If coming from East Bay use 92 from East Bay. East bound (lower deck) is not affected. LINK <
Words of Wisdom:
~ Proper gear, a working machine and gas in the tank is highly recommended.
~ Ride within your comfort zone and leave room for bad karma.
~ I may pass slower traffic when it's safe. You don't have to. Remember, someone will wait for you at turns, so just relax and have fun.
~ I maintain the Pace according to road conditions with safety of all riders in mind. Be mindful of others in the group. Let faster riders get ahead of you by moving to the right and signaling them to pass you. And if you want to pass the rider(s) who are in front of you, make sure to do so safely and without startling them.
~ If you know the area and would like to sweep for the group please let me know.
~ Good stuff to read before going on group rides (CLICK).
~ Keep an eye for the rider(s) behind you so they won't take a wrong turn. If they get lost, you'll buy their dinner
~ City riding means traffic lights, stop signs and of course other vehicles. Below is an exaggerated case, but it illustrates that getting separated doesn't mean getting lost. BLUE dots are riders going from A to G points of a route. RED dots are the riders who have stopped and are waiting for the rider behind them. When stopping at a turn for a rider who is behind you, wait "before" the turn so they see you. Not "after" or "in" the turn, because by the time they realize you have turned, they have missed the turn, or they may not even see you at all. If you approach a rider who is waiting for you, but you don't see the rider behind you, please stop at the same stop so the one waiting can go while you wait for the rest to arrive. REMEMBER, WE ALL WAIT .... ALL EXCEPT THE SWEEP SINCE HE IS THE LAST ONE
Weather: No rain is in forecast for Sunday.
Frequent Pauses:
As you can see, we have a large size group (45 bikes, 10 are 2 up = 55). So, just like a Caterpillar, the “Head“ section will have to wait for the “Tail” to arrive. Therefore, there will be frequent “pauses” to make sure the chain is not broken and that we have riders who are “marking” the turns for people behind them. We need 4 volunteers …. 1 sweep, of course. Arrival of sweep at any STOP/PAUSE means all are accounted for and we may proceed. . We’ll also need 3 “advanced” riders who will help with a smooth flow. Please email me if you feel comfortable helping out. 2 Already have raised their hands, but we’ll need 2 more. Then 1-2 more as back ups.
Tight Group:
We need to zip thru traffic lights and stop signs in as many at a time as possible. Ride staggered, and if we do come to a stop, feel free to fill all lanes that we can take so as soon as light turns green a whole bunch of us can pass before it turns red again. Picture below shows how to keep a tight group(distance from riders ahead of you) but only on straights and flat sections with good view. When on crooked streets, uphills or down hills, ride single file 2-3 seconds apart. Remember, 2-3 seconds means the distance from rider in front or behind you will vary according to the speed at the time. Please don't tailgate or crowd the rider in front of you. But if you see you are getting far from the rider in front, and the bikes behind you are on your tail, it means you'll be more comfortable riding closer to the tail end of the group which is normally slower. When it's safe, move to the right and signal them to pass you. And if you want to pass a slower rider, make sure to do so safely.
If you feel uncomfortable for any reason make sure to chat with Mehran or the sweep at the next stop so we can figure out how best to assist the situation.
Down Hills:
SF Hills (going down) can be intimidating. Downshift (2nd gear, or even 1st if you like) and lean back a little. Cover front brakes. If you are comfortable with "trail braking", cover the rear brake also, but DON'T lock the rear wheel. Just a gentle tap on the pedal. Prepare for sudden stops by the rider ahead of you. LEAVE 2-3 seconds distance.
Going up hills is the same principal. Shift weight forward and lean on the tank.
... and of course the cardinal rule of watching out for the riders behind you. Everyone must keep an eye for the rider behind them. The only one who is exempt is the sweep, and that's because he is the last rider
Bay Area Weather Outlook:
Thanks Tina. Hope you can make it.
I didn't realize it was on the 19th. That's a couple days before I ship the bike out. Nice way to empty the tank.
Just a note: Bay Bridge Westbound (upper deck) is closed that weekend. From East Bay use 92 (Hayward bridge). East bound (lower deck) is not affected. Link: http://baybridgei...

Solomon, make sure you meet us at the start point ;-)
Coffee Bar SF is the start point, not the 1st stop point, right? :D
Yeap :~D
Okie dokes, see you all there!
Wow 38 ppl already rsvp? This might get really big like the sf monthly night ride lol
Yeap, but 32 biles (6 bikes are 2-up).
Friends, seating and feeding 30-40 people is going to be a challenge. What do you think of making a shorter-than-planned
stop for snacks/refreshments only. We can then keep riding but end the ride a bit sooner in order for you to have a proper dinner after the ride (at home, etc). Please give me your thoughts.
sounds fine to me.
Sounds like a smart idea.
oooo, this sounds like so MUCH FUN! I hope you'll run this again as I'd love to experience this route!
Yes Natalie, the next ""holiday"
Monday, we'll do this on the Sunday before it.
More info added above. Please review :-)
Please read info about group flow, etc. Also, we need 4 volunteers ?. 1 sweep, of course. Arrival of sweep at any STOP/PAUSE means all are accounted for and we may proceed. . We also need 3 advanced riders who will help with a smooth flow. Please email me if you feel comfortable helping out. 2 Already have raised their hands,se we need 2 more. PLUS 1-2 more as back up.
Mehran,
I can help as a sweep or a backup sweep as I live in SF and know The City well.
Clint
I'll help were i can (if i am in-town).. may have to do that funeral/memorial for Kim's brother.. (things are up in the air).
Mehran, see you there.
My roommate wants to go too, so I'll be 2 up if she is up to it that day.
Thanks, Big Bob
Stop / Regroup spots are posted here. Please review and make a note of these locations: http://www.groupr...

Mehran,
do you have a Garmin gdb file for the route or a detailed Google map?
Yes, Google map please ;-)
Friends, the route remains fluid. City driving/riding means - like a taxi driver - having to alter an intended route on the fly, which often could mean making the turn at the next block instead of this block. Or making a left turn to by-pass a traffic jam and then a right, rather than going straight. Please see the GENERAL route that I posted.
~~~
There is 20% a chance of rain on Sunday, and 30% chance Sunday evening. Stay tuned. Rain will postpone this ride.
Thank you Clint, JC, Richard, Solomon and Steve for offering to help keep our huge group together and moving. If you can, let?s meet around 2 PM to chat and exchange phone numbers. - - - - All, there is also a Starbucks few feet from our meeting spot (to the East). In case there?s a line for coffee or to use the rest room here, you can walk to the Starbucks.
Yes, meeting a 2:00p sounds like a good idea. See you then
See you at 2pm Mehran.
Steve, it's a JPG (image) file. Try this link again and scroll down to view/save/print the page and the image : http://www.groupr...
Ok, yes I was able to make this work but the level of detail is not to street level. Living here, I get the general idea of where you want to go but see some problem areas. Easy to get lost in the Presidio people will really need a detailed map if they get lost. Also you route up into the Sunset Heights area needs detail. It will be easy for people to get separated there as well. Just trying to give helpful feedback. You can create a route in google maps and "share" it.
GPS route file nearly final. I'll tweak it a bit more and load it tonight/Saturday. There will be a link in the "Route Details" page to the file. Once you get to the server, right click on the file and save it on your PC. Then after you open Garmin MapSource, use File/Open menu to open the file from within MapSource. ~~ For those who are not using a GPS unit, I'll draw a Google map, but due to Google limitations (A-Z points only), it will be in sections. Now, pray for clear skies :-)
Garmin GPS Route as well as Google map are available at this link: http://www.groupr...
- - - Dave the GPS file first, then from within Garmin MapSource open it. Google maps are in sections because only 25 points are allowed per map. Please test them.
Wow, great job with the GPS file! How long did it take you to enter the 108 waypoints?
Did you have to get a parade permit for this ride, Mehran? ;)~
No. But if anyone asks, just say we're part of the Warren Hellman Tribute group :~)
Hi there. New to this group. I'd love to join you for this ride but I didn't rsvp in time and now it's full. Any chance you could squeeze in 1 more? If not no worries. I'll hit up the next one :)
Of course Mark. Beyond 30 riders it won't make a difference ;-D
Looks like a great ride but I did not RSVP either. Think I can tag along Mehran? Live and work in the city so I can help if you need. It cool if you think the group is getting too big. Definitely RSVP for your next one.
Sure Francis. It'll be a slow ride, but a fun ride.
Thanks for that list of regroup spots, Mehran; I've entered them into my GPS for safe keeping.
Mehran - thank you and the asst. organizers for all the work that went into this ride. Great group of people and a really fun ride. I saw a side of SF I never knew about.
Thanks again to our riders and our road captains. Some of you may have realized that we skipped the last end of the ride through Telegraph Hill neighborhood due to heavy traffic on the Embarcadero. We'll do it for sure on the next Spooky Ride.
the Garmin file was great! Great idea!
I got stuck at light with a small group of 7 riders. The lead group disappeared over the horizon down Balboa St. One rider thought he knew the way and took lead. Looking at my GPS, I wasn't sure he knew where he was going. I pealed off and got to the Legion of Honor before they did. Problem averted.
